2011 White Horse Award Luncheon Nov. 3

Thursday, September 15, 2011 @ 12:09 PM

The White Horse Award has been bestowed annually to industry applause since 2003, but 2011 promises to be the most exciting ever.  The luncheon is slated for Thursday, November 3 at 10:30 a.m., in conjunction with the Breeders’ Cup World Championships at legendary Churchill Downs.

The signature award – the White Horse – is presented to the backstretch worker who has done something heroic on behalf of human or horse.  According to retired jockey Pay Day, who co-hosted the awards ceremony in 2008-2010, “I think it’s God’s plan that every day someone does something heroic on a certain level” (Blood-Horse.com, 1 Oct. 2009).

Nominations are being accepted through September for the 2011 award.  Submit nominations to RTCA at info@rtcanational.org.

But that’s not all!

This year’s featured speaker is owner of Well Armed – winner of 2009 Dubai World Cup – Bill Casner.

Also, the annual Community Service Award will be presented to HBPA for its service to horsemen across the nation and its widespread support for racetrack chaplaincies.

And a special tribute will honor the late Chick Lang, affectionately known by many as “Mr. Preakness” for his impact on that annual event during his career at Pimlico from 1960 to 1987.

Tickets are $125 each, or $1,100 for table of 10.  Call (859) 410-7822, or email info@rtcanational.org.

Pat Day to present White Horse awards at Breeders’ Cup luncheon Georgetown, Ky. – Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day will be master of ceremonies for the Race Track Chaplaincy of America’s 2010 White Horse Luncheon at Churchill Downs. Winner of 12 Breeders’ Cup races, Day has been the racetrack chaplaincy’s national spokesman since his retirement in 2005. The White Horse Award will be presented for an act of heroism on behalf of human or horse. Nominations for this prestigious award are under review, the recipient to be announced later this month. The family of the late Bill Howard, a Louisville-based businessman and philanthropist, will receive the Community Service Award on Howard’s behalf. Co-founder and CEO of Mercer Transportation, Howard had significant impact in racetrack ministry, primarily with the construction of Christ Chapel at Churchill Downs. Past recipients of the Community Service Award include renowned artist Fred Stone, as well as first-responders to the crash of Blue Grass Airport’s flight 5191 Bryan Jared, Jon Sallee, and James Maupin, among other notable recipients. “Bill Howard loved horse racing, he loved Churchill Downs, and he loved people,” said chaplain Ken Boehm. “Because of him, life on the backstretch centers on Christ Chapel.”

Recognizing the success and benevolence of the late Dick Broadbent, a special tribute is planned at the event. Broadbent is known throughout horse racing for founding Bloodstock Research Information Systems, but his greatest legacy might be the founding of Christian Word Ministries, which has a global reach.

Broadbent’s outreach “has distributed nearly six million prayer books,” according to RTCA spokesman Paul Ransdell, “impacting untold millions of lives, affecting hope and change worldwide.” The event is slated for November 4th in the Triple Crown Room of the Jockey Club Suites. Tickets are $75, available by email at info@rtcanational.org, or by phone at (502) 863-8792.

Organized in 1971, the Race Track Chaplaincy of America sanctions 77 chaplains who serve at 117 tracks and training centers worldwide. Its mission is to provide, with excellence, for the spiritual, emotional, physical and social/educational needs of horse racing’s vast workforce. For more information, visit our website at rtcanational.org. The White Horse Award is so named from Revelation 19:11-16 of the Bible.
